11 Excellent Tips for Packing Your Holiday Suitcase

If you’ve never felt stressed out while doing your last-minute holiday packing, you’re either an emotionless robot or you prefer to travel carrying nothing but a small duty-free bag.

We at HEALTH4U tend to suffer from pre-holiday anxiety as well, so we’ve compiled a list of simple rules for organizing one’s suitcase.

By following these easy-to-memorize examples, you will always stay in control of the situation and make the best use of even the smallest of suitcases!

1. Don’t stack your clothes — store them rolled up!

A great way to save suitcase space and make sure that your clothes don’t crease is to store them in tight rolls instead of stacking them on top of each other.

This way, even a cramped suitcase can easily house 3 pairs of shorts, 3 pairs of pants, 3 pairs of jeans, 1 skirt, 2 swimsuits, 3 summer sweaters, 10 jerseys, 5 shirts, and 4 dresses.

2. Use vacuum bags

Vacuum compression bags are invaluable for packing bulky objects such as jackets, children’s clothes, soft toys, and bed linen. Such a method of packing will save you some serious space.

And when the time comes to pack for home, vacuum bags will prove handy once again — for storing dirty laundry.

3. Employ the ’pyramid’ principle

First, pack your shoes by arranging them along the suitcase walls. Next, pack large clothes, such as pants and skirts. Don’t roll them up — lying spread out at the bottom of the suitcase, these clothes will serve as wrapping for the rest of your things. Now, roll up your noncreasing clothes — they will form the middle layer of the ’pyramid.’ After that, roll up and pack the lighter/easily creased items.
Finally, pack the highly creasable things, cosmetics, accessories, documents, and small fragile objects — place them at the top of the ’pyramid.’

4. Say ’No’ to the umbrella

If you happen to own a large umbrella — leave it at home! Pack a raincoat instead, because it’ll take up much less room in your suitcase. In fact, we advise you to buy several disposable raincoats before going on holiday to give you enough protection from bad weather. And once the rain is over you can simply throw it away!

5. Buy travel-size cosmetics

All of us feel the temptation to pack our holiday suitcase with as many tubes and jars as possible. However, you’d be wise to resist this urge in favor of taking more useful things. While on holiday, try to make do with travel-size versions of your favorite cosmetic products.

6. Pack small things the right way

When it comes to packing small objects such as USB memory sticks, pocketbooks, hairpins, tights, socks, sunglasses, and reading glasses, place them inside packed shoes, cosmetics boxes, document folders, and suitcase pockets. As for your jewelry items, you can store them inside a pillbox.

7. Use coat hangers

When transporting valuable pieces of clothing (such as classic shirts, business suits, tuxedos, and cocktail dresses), rolling them up inside your suitcase just won’t do. To ensure that these items reach your holiday destination in wearable condition, put them inside holdalls without removing the coat hangers. This way, you can easily make use of wall-mounted hooks available inside train compartments and on planes.

8. Don’t pack more medicine than necessary

There’s no point in trying to fit the entire contents of your medicine cabinet into your holiday suitcase. Choose a more sensible approach by selecting only the most essential drugs. Don’t pack more than one pill sheet of each type of medicine — this will suffice to deal with any emergency.

To keep your medicines safe, put them inside sandwich bags and place the bags inside the packed shoes.

9. Don’t leave empty spaces

When packing suitcases, you might decide to leave some room for any souvenirs you might acquire during your holidays. Such a decision could cause your packed clothes to become seriously creased during the journey.

To prevent this, you should fill the empty spaces with small items of clothing or lumps of wrapping paper.

10. Only take what’s really useful

Things like notebook covers, camera cases, hairdryers, and travel guides should remain at home. Wrapping your electronic gadgets in a soft beach wrap or a hoodie will give them adequate protection throughout the journey. Paper travel guides can easily be replaced with smartphone apps. As for sorting out the hairdryer issue — you can make do with the one provided at the hotel.

The same goes for beach slippers, diving goggles, sun creams, children’s toys, and straw hats — all of these items can be bought once you get to your holiday destination.

11. There are even more ways to pack your stuff

The internet is full of smart packing tips if you are not happy with simply rolling your clothes. For example, you can make rolls out of your underwear so that it won’t unroll in your suitcase. Check out this video for more instructions.

And, finally, some more brief but valuable tips:

  • Prevent your phone charger and earphone cables from tangling by wrapping them over a small pocketbook or some similar object.
  • Wrapping breakable glass items in a sock and placing them inside a packed shoe will keep them safe throughout the roughest of journeys.
  • Prevent your packed shoes from soiling the rest of the suitcase’s contents by placing each pair inside a disposable bathing cap.
  • Make sure that your favorite bra doesn’t get crumpled during the journey by placing rolled-up socks inside its cups.
  • Make your shower gel and shampoo bottles spill proof by unscrewing their lids, putting some plastic wrapping over the openings, and screwing the lids back on. This way, even if the lids become loose, none of the liquid will spill onto your packed clothes.
  • Prevent your necklaces from getting tangled during the journey by slipping them through a cocktail straw and fastening the clasps.

Menopause, the universal biological event in a woman’s life occurs at about age 51, marking the transition from the reproductive to the non-reproductive phase of life.  As the ovaries become less and less efficient and produce less estrogen, many women begin to experience a range of uncomfortable symptoms that may affect their quality of life.  In some cases, hormone replacement therapy, (HRT) may be a good option for these women.

What Happens As Women Age

Typically, the older women get menstrual periods change in character, becoming irregular until they cease altogether several years later. After the age of about 54, the ovaries become totally nonfunctional as blood levels containing estrogen drop to very low values for the remainder of a woman’s life. It is at this time that a woman must decide whether or not to pursue treatment with hormone replacement therapy (HRT).

Logically, this decision should be based on the possible immediate and long-term consequences of having almost no estrogen in the body after menopause, along with the known benefits and risks of HRT.

Common Menopausal Systems

  • Hot Flashes— A sudden sensation of feverish heat occurs in about 90 percent of women during menopause.  There are large differences between women in the frequency and severity of hot flashes, however.
  • Atrophic Vaginitis— This is a thinning of the tissue that lines the vagina.  This also decreases vaginal lubrication so that sexual relations may be uncomfortable.
  • Psychological Symptoms—Many women experience psychological symptoms around the time of menopause. Most of these involve changes in mood such as sadness, irritability, and nervousness or anxiety.
  • Intellectual Function—Research finds that estrogen helps to maintain verbal memory, and possibly enhances the capacity for new learning in women.  This may become impaired during menopause.

Reasons For Menopausal Symptoms

  • Hot Flashes are thought to be due to changes in the concentration of certain neurotransmitters in the brain that occur because of the relative deficiency in estrogen. Hot flashes are usually most intense around the time of menopause (48 to 51 years) and tend to occur less frequently in the postmenopausal phase.
  • Atrophic Vaginitis and the loss of vaginal lubrication are symptoms that are estrogen-dependent and respond reliably to HRT.
  • Mood Disorders—It is known that estrogen is capable of acting in areas of the brain that influence mood. Furthermore, estrogen can increase the concentration of a neurotransmitter, a chemical substance that helps neurons communicate, that acts to enhance mood.

Although it is possible that the decrease in estrogen production around the time of menopause can precipitate depressive symptoms, which are reversed by estrogen replacement therapy, the dose of estrogen conventionally used will not, in itself, alleviate a major depressive illness. It is, therefore, very important to make the distinction between depressive symptoms and a full-blown depressive illness which may require treatment with antidepressant drugs.

  • Intellectual Function—The fact that estrogen increases the amount of an enzyme needed to produce the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which is known to be important for memory functions, may explain the enhancement of specific aspects of memory that estrogen seems to facilitate. Whether or not estrogen will decrease memory deficits or retard the deterioration of memory in Alzheimer’s disease remains to be tested.

Why Hormone Replacement Therapy May Be Beneficial

  • Long-term Benefits—Currently, there are several well-established long-term benefits of HRT. For example, estrogen replacement therapy can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease by approximately 50 percent. Estrogen accomplishes this in several ways, one of them being a favorable modification of lipid metabolism. In addition, estrogen has direct effects on the walls of coronary arteries.
  • Bone Density—There is a gradual loss of bone with increasing age, which is accelerated in women after menopause occurs. Osteoporosis defines a condition in which women have lost so much bone that they sustain fractures spontaneously or following minimal trauma. In fact, 17 to 25 percent of older women will sustain a fracture of the hip or spine respectively. Many studies have shown that estrogen effectively prevents bone loss in postmenopausal women.

Possible Risks Related to Hormone Replacement Therapy

  • Uterine Cancer—In the mid-1970’s, an increased risk of cancer of the endometrium, the tissue that lines the uterus, was observed in women who were given estrogen replacement therapy. Since then, it has been demonstrated that the addition of a progestin, a synthetic form of the hormone progesterone, to an estrogen replacement regimen dramatically decreases the risk of endometrial cancer.
  • Breast Cancer—Conclusions regarding a possible increased risk of breast cancer in postmenopausal women receiving estrogen are more tentative. Four studies, which combined results of many smaller investigations, failed to demonstrate a significantly increased risk of breast cancer in postmenopausal estrogen-users compared to nonusers.

A fifth study did find a greater incidence in estrogen-users but it appeared only after 15 years of continuous estrogen use. It is thought that the presence of benign breast disease is not a contraindication to HRT.

While the benefits of HRT would seem to outweigh the risks for many women, several factors must be considered before making a decision with your physician.

These may include:

  • Your personal medical history including:
  • History of certain conditions including breast cancer, liver disease, blood clots, heart disease
  • Age and length of time HRT needed
  • Type of therapy necessary
  • Whether or not menopause is the result of surgical menopause, (hysterectomy) or naturally occurring
  • Severity of menopausal symptoms

Is Nutella healthy? Or is it worse than a chocolate bar?

With certain products I often wonder what goes through the heads of their marketing team. Nutella would definitely be an example of one of those products. In my opinion, this is health washing at it’s finest. Their marketing is such a stretch, I find it hard to believe they aren’t purposely trying to trick us into thinking their product is healthier than it really is so that we will consume more of it (putting more profits in their pocket!).

This product is positioned in the market as a healthy breakfast option. When you watch their commercials and read their messaging you will hear things like “part of a balanced breakfast”, “spread some energy”, etc. It appears that their goal is to get us consumers to believe that this is a great product to give our kids, to start their day off right. But is it?

Let’s undress what is really in Nutella to see if it looks good naked.

Ingredients in Nutella:

Sugar, modified palm oil, hazelnuts, cocoa, skim milk powder, whey powder, lecithin, vanillin.

What about the first 2 ingredients?

The biggest thing that jumps out at me when I read this ingredient list is the first 2 ingredients: sugar and modified palm oil. When Nutella talks about their product in their marketing material they say that it is a “deliciously unique spread made from the combination of roasted hazelnuts, skim milk, and a hint of cocoa.” Hmm, what happened to the first 2 MAIN ingredients. The thing is, marketers know that consumers don’t like sugar and modified palm oil (because they are unhealthy for us). So instead of using healthier ingredients they simply (and cleverly) omit them from their communication. In my opinion, this is misleading. I don’t think companies should be allowed to cherry pick whichever ingredients they want from their product and use those in their marketing in a way that convinces consumers a product is healthier than it really is.

Is it really just a “hint” of cocoa?

If you have ever seen a Nutella commercial you have likely noticed another marketing trick. They know that many consumers think skim milk is a healthy food and that chocolate (cocoa) should be consumed in moderation. Therefore, when they present the product to you they show you a big glass of skim milk and a tiny little teaspoon of cocoa. They also indicate in their marketing that the product contains a “hint” of cocoa. However, when we strip down the ingredients we can see clearly that there is actually more cocoa than skim milk powder in the product.

Let’s be honest… is it really part of a balanced breakfast?

Nutella website:

“Research shows that children do best starting their day with a balanced breakfast giving them the energy they need to feel and do their best. Canada’s Food Guide recommends including at least 3 out of the 4 Food Groups (Vegetables & Fruit, Grain Products, Milk Products, Meats & Alternatives) as part of a balanced breakfast. NUTELLA® can be part of a balanced breakfast, spread on whole grain toast and served with a glass of milk and a piece of fruit.”

This seems like a bit of a stretch to me. While I agree that children should start their day with a balanced breakfast, I find it very hard to agree that giving them a sugar and modified palm oil chocolate spread will benefit them. They point out that if you consume this product with fruit, whole grain toast, and a glass of milk you will be consuming a complete breakfast. I assume they are referring to the fact that the small amount of hazelnuts in Nutella satisfies the “Meat & Alternatives” category? Like I said, this seems like a stretch. Would you give your child a Mars bar for breakfast? Probably not. Nutella isn’t much different. The fact that there are nuts in it is irrelevant since there is so much sugar and modified palm oil.

What’s the deal with sugar?

Nutella contains a whopping 11g of sugar in just 1 measly little tablespoon.

The World Health Organization in 2014 suggested the DAILY sugar intake for kids could be as low as 12.5g. Clearly, the amount of sugar in Nutella is not ideal.

One big problem with white sugar is that it is heavily processed and refined. It therefore provides large amounts of “empty calories”. This means that you are getting the calories without any of the beneficial vitamins and minerals that our body requires to function.

This excess in sugar is converted to fat in the body and is a major cause of obesity. It also spikes our blood sugar and can lead to many undesirable health implications like high cholesterol, diabetes, and heart disease.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years. In fact, in 2012, more than one third of children and adolescents were overweight or obese. This number continues to rise.

The problem is that obesity is very dangerous. It significantly increases their risk of developing heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, stroke, and even cancer.

White sugar is not nutritious, it is not a healthy food for adults or children, and it should be avoided as much as possible. It certainly should not be consumed on a daily basis and it is not part of a balanced breakfast!

What about modified palm oil?

Modified palm oil is a highly refined and processed oil. It is not as nutritious as natural palm oil that is high in beneficial vitamins and minerals. Food manufacturers typically use a “modified” palm oil because it has a longer shelf life and in some cases, a more desirable “mouth feel”. Many companies started using fats like this modified palm oil to replace hydrogenated oils in their products when consumers started to avoid trans fats. Unfortunately, there is still some concern that these modified oils may cause health problems, especially if consumed regularly.

What’s a great alternative?

If you are looking for something delicious to spread on your toast in the morning I recommend Almond Hazelnut Butter (make sure the only ingredients are almonds and hazelnuts).

If you are reading this thinking “ya but what about the chocolate!”. I have a solution. Add the jar of Almond Hazelnut Butter to a high-speed blender or food processor and blend/mix in some raw cacao (raw chocolate powder), and if you want a bit of sweetness add in some honey (a healthy alternative to sugar because it is loaded with beneficial nutrients and health benefits).

What’s the bottom line – Is Nutella healthy?

Nutella loves to market their product as being part of a complete breakfast. They want us to believe that it is a healthy way to start our day and a healthy food to feed our kids. They tell us it’s a “deliciously unique spread made from the combination of roasted hazelnuts, skim milk, and a hint of cocoa.” However, in my opinion, a more accurate description would be: “Nutella is mainly a sugar and modified oil spread with hazelnuts, cocoa, and a hint of skim milk powder.” I don’t believe this product is part of a complete breakfast and I think that if it is consumed (which I don’t recommend that it is), it should only be consumed as a treat on occasion.

Personally I think I’ll stick to the healthy alternative that fuels my body and yet still tastes DELICIOUS!

What are your favorite foods to eat for breakfast? Let me know in the comment section below. I would love to hear from you!

Plus, I would really appreciate it if you could help me spread the word about Nutella by sharing this article with your friends and family. I want everyone to know what’s really in the Nutella jar so we can vote with our fork (or in this case our knife) for the food that is best for ourselves and our family. Thanks for all the support!

8 Reasons to Stop Drinking Coke Every Day

A lot of recent studies show that consuming sodas every day starts to wreak havoc on your dietary intake without you even noticing it. Health4u  made a list of the most convincing reasons to refrain from drinking Coca-Cola on a daily basis.

8. Vitamin deficiency

The phosphoric acid contained in Coke along with caffeine, which has a diuretic effect, starts washing nutrients and vitamins out of your body 60 minutes after you had the drink. Imagine that happening every day. That’s how a vitamin deficiency starts.

7. Dental erosion

The high acidity and sugary ingredients of Coca-Cola cause tooth enamel and cavities. If you add in low levels of calcium due to vitamin deficiency, you can end up with your teeth rotting inside and outside. And it won’t take long.

6. Anxiety

Along with sleep deprivation, anxiety is a side effect of consuming caffeine. Each can of Coke contains the same amount of caffeine as a cup of strong coffee. It is also proven to be very addictive, so once you decide to cut your dose you might experience headaches, irritability, fatigue, or even depression.

5. Obesity

When we talk about extra weight, it’s not so much about how you look but more about how you feel. Excess weight is not a problem by itself, but it increases the pressure on your immune and cardiovascular system as well as your joints and bones, which are already weakened by a lack of calcium.

4. Skin problems

Drinking Coke every day has the same impact on your skin as smoking. Consuming soda has an inflammatory effect on the body due to high levels of sugar. It dehydrates the skin, emphasizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It accelerates skin aging, making it saggy and dull. It also exaggerates eczema, or very dry, itchy, inflamed skin, and acne.

3. Heart and blood problems

An increased level of bad cholesterol increases the chances of a heart attack. If you have only 1 can of Coke a day, you can already start suffering from high blood pressure. And women consuming these amounts of Coca-Cola are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes. Are you sure it’s worth it?

2. Risk of cancer

We are not saying you’ll get cancer if you drink Coke every day. But, due to the presence of benzene molecules in Coca-Cola and its plastic package, doctors recommend sticking to 1 can of Coke a week to reduce the risk of cancer.

1. Kidney failure

If you think that choosing the diet version of Coke is safer, then we are about to disappoint you. Zero sugar Coke probably doesn’t contain sugar at all. Instead, it contains artificial sweeteners that are way too unhealthy for your kidneys. Especially if you are addicted to having it every day.

Try to Touch Your Toes, You May Have a Heart Problem!

The study showed that if you can’t bend over and touch your toes, you will probably have problems with your arteries. Luckily, there’s an easy yoga pose known as Paschimottanasana which can help. This pose can improve your flexibility and help you touch your toes, which will make your arteries more flexible. To do the Paschimottanasana pose, sit on the floor and extend your legs, then bend over from the waist and touch your toes.

How does yoga make your arteries more flexible?
The theory behind the pose is that it starts a psychological chain reaction which involves elastin and collagen which can keep your arteries elastic and improve your blood flow. According to one of the lead researchers in the study, Dr. Yamamoto, by making your arteries more elastic, we may be capable to use yoga to relieve age-related arterial stiffness as well as other problems. The scientists that conducted the study now believe that stretching and yoga should be included into your everyday workout regimen in order to keep your cardiovascular system in shape and prevent a variety of ailments.

2 Apples, 1 lemon and 1 cup of oats, prepare to lose size without control

In your everyday battle with excess weight include this amazing combination that will contribute to lose your weight faster, and will provide needed nutrients.
Main ingredient of this smoothie is green apple. Green apple has long been recognized as one of the healthiest fruits. It is innately packed with a variety of essential nutrients such as proteins, vitamins, minerals and fibers.

These are known to offer relief from digestive disorders and are also very effective in lowering blood cholesterol and BP, stabilizing blood sugar levels & improving appetite.

The fiber in the apple is in the form of pectin and this is essential for two reasons: it helps to regulate peristalsis or intestinal motility and helps to control appetite more easily due to its satiating effect.

Also green apples are great source of vitamins in group B. The vitamins from this group are needed to properly metabolize nutrients and especially carbohydrates, B vitamins prevent carbohydrates from being subsequently converted to fat. Also green apple helps in decreasing fluid retention in the body, which contributes to excess weight.

Another great property is that green apple is very low in calories-one medium sized contains only 80 calories!

The green apple decreases the absorption of sugar in the intestine, so it also prevents sudden releases of the hormone insulin, a fact that is directly related to the gain of body fat.

These reasons are enough to make this super smoothie and here is the recipe

125 gr of oats
1/2 liters of mineral water
1 Organic lemon
2 Organic apple (preferably green)
Preparation and use:

Cut apples into small pieces. Pour the mineral water and put the chopped apples in your blender, incorporate your oats and mix until you get a nice smooth homogeneous mixture.

Pour the mixture into a bowl and then squeeze the juice of your organic lemon and stir in the mixture.

Consume the smoothie once you are ready. It is recommendable to consume this drink for a week, every day.
