Warning Signs of Zinc Deficiency and How to Cure It

Zinc is an important trace mineral that we need to stay healthy, but did you know that one out of 3 people may suffer from zinc deficiency without even realizing it? Read on to find out the signs and symptoms of zinc deficiency and what you can do to prevent or reverse zinc deficiency.

The Importance of Zinc

Zinc is an important trace mineral that is responsible for a number of different functions in our body and helps stimulate the activity of 100 different enzymes. This element is second only to iron in its concentration in the body.

Zinc is found in cells throughout the body and is needed for the body’s defensive (immune) system to properly work. Zinc also

Plays a role in cell division, cell growth, wound healing, and the breakdown of carbohydrates.
Our bodies need Zinc for the senses of smell and taste.
During pregnancy, infancy, and childhood the body needs zinc to grow and develop properly.
Unfortunately, a lot of people don’t get enough of this crucial nutrient.

Zinc Deficiency is Common

Zinc deficiency is more common than you might imagine.

According to a report released by the World Health Organization, the global rate of zinc deficiency is around 31 percent.1

A study published in the June 2012 edition of the Journal of Trace Elements in Medicine and Biology found that zinc deficiency may afflict as many as 2 billion people worldwide.2 These numbers indicate that issues with consuming enough zinc or absorbing zinc when consumed may be problematic for a third of the people around the globe.

Generally, when someone is suffering from a zinc deficiency, it is because the intake is inadequate, because it is being poorly absorbed into the body or their need for zinc increases.

Risk Factors for Developing Zinc Deficiency

Many factors can affect the body’s ability to process zinc. Here are some common things that can impact zinc absorption or contribute to zinc deficiency:

• Diabetes
• Alcoholism
• Age—elderly are more prone for having zinc deficiency
• H pylori infection8 (Find out how to naturally treat H Pylori)
• Using zinc-depleting drugs, such as many birth control pills, blood pressure medications and antibiotics
• Vegetarianism
• Pregnant and lactating women
• Sickle cell disease (a group of inherited red blood cell disorders)

Current Tests are Not Accurate

Plasma or serum zinc levels are the most commonly used indices for evaluating zinc deficiency, but these levels do not necessarily reflect cellular zinc status due to tight homeostatic control mechanisms (I’ve already mentioned this issue when it comes to detecting magnesium deficiency).

A person may suffer from zinc deficiency despite the absence of abnormal laboratory indices. In many cases, doctors consider risk factors (such as inadequate caloric intake, alcoholism, and digestive diseases) and symptoms of zinc deficiency (such as impaired growth in infants and children) when determining the need for zinc supplementation.

Symptoms of Zinc Deficiency

A zinc deficiency can be identified by:

• Growth retardation
• Diarrhea
• Hair loss (nutritional deficiencies are one of the ten causes of hair loss)
• Delayed sexual maturation and impotence
• Loss of appetite
• Delayed healing of wounds
• Eye and skin lesions
• White spots on fingernails, transverse lines and poor nail growth or brittle nails
• Headaches and dizziness
• Bitter taste in mouth
• Zinc deficiency is common in people who have low lymphocyte count

Many of these symptoms are non-specific and often associated with other health conditions; therefore, a medical examination is necessary to ascertain whether a zinc deficiency is present.

Recommended Zinc Intake

The Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for zinc is 8 milligrams per day for adult females and 11 milligrams per day for adult males.

The recommended intake for children 1-8 years old ranges from 3-5 milligrams, increasing as the child gets older.

Males 9-13 years old require 8 milligrams of zinc per day. After the age of 14, the requirement increases to the 11 milligrams per day that is required for all adult males.

For females over the age of 8, the requirement stays stable at 8 milligrams per day, except for ages 14-18, where the recommendation increases to 9 milligrams per day.

Pregnant and lactating women have an increased need for zinc at 11-13 milligrams per day, depending on age.

Sources of Zinc in Food

• Shellfish, beef, and other red meats are rich sources of zinc.
• Nuts and legumes are relatively good plant sources of zinc.

Zinc bioavailability (the fraction of zinc retained and used by the body) is relatively high in meat, eggs, and seafood because of the relative absence of compounds that inhibit zinc absorption and the presence of sulfur-containing amino acids (cysteine and methionine) that improve zinc absorption.

The zinc in whole-grain products and plant proteins is less bioavailable due to their relatively high content of phytic acid, a compound that inhibits zinc absorption. This is one of the reasons for soaking your nuts and seeds before eating them.

I’ve already written that pumpkin seeds (pepitas) are a good source of zinc. Here are other sources of zinc 5:

1. Oysters, cooked, breaded and fried,3 ounces 74 mg (493% DV)

2. Beef chuck roast, braised, 3 ounces 7 mg (47% DV)

3. Crab, Alaska king, cooked, 3 ounces 6.5 mg (43% DV)

4. Beef patty, broiled, 3 ounces 5.3 mg (35% DV)

5. Lobster, cooked, 3 ounces 3.4 mg (23% DV)

6. Pork chop, loin, cooked, 3 ounces 2.9 mg (19% DV)

7. Baked beans, canned, plain or vegetarian, ½ cup 2.9 mg ( 19% DV)

8. Chicken, dark meat, cooked, 3 ounces 2.4 mg (16% DV)

9. Yogurt, fruit, low fat, 8 ounces 1.7 mg (11% DV)

10. Cashews, dry roasted, 1 ounce 1.6 mg (11% DV)

11. Chickpeas, cooked, ½ cup 1.3 mg (9% DV)

12. Yogurt, fruit, low fat, 8 ounces 1.7 mg (11% DV)

13. Chickpeas, cooked, ½ cup 1.3 mg (9% DV)

14. Cheese, Swiss, 1 ounce 1.2 mg (8% DV)

15. Almonds, dry roasted, 1 ounce 0.9 mg (6% DV)

Warm Water vs. Cold Water – Which Damages the Health

We all like coffee after waking up or cold water for drinking. But to get most benefits of water, know if you need it warm or cold.

Many studies said warm water before breakfast is healthy and the best way to start the day.

1. Less pains

Warm water removes throat swelling, and pain relief. It soothes irritation and dryness in throat. This is good for those days when you wake up with dry throat and cannot swallow. Sip warm water and soothe cramps in belly too.

2. Better bowels

A study from Journal of neurogastroenterology and motility said even 58% of people have achalasia, when the muscles of lower esophagus cannot relax and warm water helped here. Glass of this before eating makes better colon and bowels. Also setting the body for better food absorbing in the day.

3. Better blood flow

This improves blood flow and when you expose to warm water, blood cell flow increases. Then it goes back to normal and increases with warmth. You get warmed from within.

4. Weight loss

Goo hydration is vital for weight loss, but warm water in particular. A study from Journal of natural science, biology and medicine monitored overweight women who had warm water. In the end, they all had less weight, BMI and appetite.

Why is cold water not good for drinking?

A glass of cold water in hot days is the best feeling, right? You cool off for a short while and also this has some side effects.

  • Cold water makes reduced hydration and constricted blood vessels
  • The body works harder to digest foods since cold water solidifies fats in blood
  • You expand energy to heat yourself up and use this
  • Making of excess mucus in respiratory tract, congestion and risks of throat infections

Oncologist Discovers Juice That Kills Cancer In 48 Hours!

Cancer prevention through a healthy lifestyle is the best bet, but be that as it may, cell mutation (the root cause of cancer) can occur for various other reasons.
God forbid I get cancer one day, I personally won’t opt for chemotherapy treatment. At least the technology and application of it today. That said, alternative cancer treatments are looking more and more promising these days. Recently, an extract was discovered that could help us dramatically.

How to Make Cancer Commit Suicide
The extract (from dandelion root) works by inducing apoptosis in the cancer cells. To put this another way, this process forces the cancer cells to commit suicide without damaging the healthy cells in any way. A much much better option than chemo!
What Does the Research Show?
A more recent study found that Dandelion Root Extract, has enormous potential, as non-toxic treatment. They made a point to state that this is preferred over the conventional methods of chemo available today. And for those of you who are more scientific, this is what they stated:

“…we observed early activation of initiator caspase-8, which led to mitochondrial destabilization and the induction of autophagy, suggesting that DRE acts through the extrinsic pathway of apoptosis.”
Also, Canadian scientists from the University of Windsor made this discovery some time ago. Like back in 2009.
It all started when one oncologist was playing around with the effects of dandelion root tea…he noticed the rate of cancer was correlated.
He consistently witnessed positive results with several types of cancer as well (e.g. colon cancer, leukemia, etc.), without damaging the surrounding healthy cells.
As a result of this work, several oncologists consider the use of this extract to be one of the most promising treatments we now have!

Anti-Cancer Dandelion Juice Recipe

How To Get Rid Of Vertigo, Dizziness And Ringing In Your Ears

Vertigo is not a disease. It is a condition that can be caused by more than 300 causes. The most common are posterior vertigo, inflammation of the vestibular nerve, Manior’s disease, hearing nerve tumor, brain blood flow disorders, changes in the neck tissue, injuries, excessive muscle tension, old age, stress and more.

People with vertigo often describe it as a disturbance in the balance in two ways, such as movement around the head or as a loss of orientation in space. The difficulties are exacerbated by the movement of the head and the change in the position of the body, and are often transmitted by hearing disorders, noise in the ear and nausea.

In vertigo caused by diseases of the inner ear (otogenic vertigo), the objects we see move horizontally from the painful to the healthy ear, and the balance is disturbed at the painful ear. Non-specific disorders of balance or false vertigo are characterized by flashing or darkness in the eyes, fainting, feeling fullness and pressure in the head and ears. The most common cause is short-term deficiency or reduced blood flow to the brain or neck.

Positional vertigo is the most common of all, and is caused by inadequate movement or head position, lying, moving in bed, or moving the head back. It lasts a minute or less, or it can be accompanied by rhythmic flickering of the eyes, while hearing remains preserved. It can be repeated every few days, and even after a few months.

Inflammation of the vestibular nerve, an attack of severe vertigo lasts for several days, and then gradually relaxes within weeks. Although the cause of the disorder and the site of damage have not been proven, most doctors consider it to be an inflammation of the nerve of the vestibular labyrinth of the inner ear.

Manior’s disease – it is a disorder in the microcirculation in the inner ear. The disease is characterized by sudden attacks of dizziness, which may last from several minutes to several hours. The attack can be so strong, that the patient needs to lie down. This type of vertigo is usually short-lived. It is accompanied by nausea, vomiting, noises, loss of balance. Sometimes people see double.

Tumor of the hearing nerve – is characterized by a constant vertigo that can be measured. Other signs suggesting a tumor include: hearing impairment and disorders of the rest of the nerves in the brain.

While vertigo comes and goes on its own, a couple of physical exercises and home remedies can be done if your symptoms don’t disappear. We offer a couple of methods that you should try to eliminate vertigo using exercises and home remedies.

1. Physical Exercises

Physical exercises are the first thing you should try to get quick relief from vertigo. The inner ear canals have small calcium “stones” that move and keep your balance. But, Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo can prevent the stones from moving like they should and this has an impact on your balance.

You can overcome this by doing a few maneuvers. They include head movements that force the calcium debris causing vertigo to no longer cause any symptoms. But do them when you are somewhere safe and won’t be driving a vehicle for a while, since they can cause increased dizziness for a shorter period of time.

• Epley Maneuver

Start by sitting on a bed. Turn your head 45 degrees to the affected ear (left or right). Quickly lie back, maintaining the head turned. Now, your shoulders should be on the pillow, with your head reclined. Wait for 30 seconds. Turn your head 90 degrees to the side of your affected ear, without raising it.

Now your head should be looking 45 degrees to the affected side. Wait another 30 seconds. Turn both your head and body 90 degrees to the side of the affected ear, into the bed. Stay like this for another 30 seconds. Finally, sit up on the side of the affected ear.

• Half Somersault

While you kneel, quickly tip your head upward and then back. Assume somersault position with your chin tucked as far as you can and toward the knee. Turn your head about 45 degrees toward the right shoulder (if your right ear is affected, in case you have issue with the left ear turn the head towards the left shoulder), to face the right elbow (or left in case the left ear is affected). Maintaining your head at 45 degrees, raised it to back/shoulder level. Maintaining your head at 45 degrees, raise it to a fully upright position.

• Brandt-Daroff Maneuver

Begin with an upright and seated position. Move into a lying position on your bed on one side with the nose pointed up at an angle of about 45 degrees. Stay in this position for about half a minute (or until your vertigo subsides). Move back to seated position. Do the same on the other side.

2. Vitamin D

If you are suffering from vertigo and dizziness, you might want to check your vitamin D levels. If vertigo is really a result of vitamin D deficiency, once your get normal levels of this vitamin, the vertigo should subside. This process may take up to couple of months, depending on your vitamin D levels. Taking vitamin D supplements is a good way to maintain normal vitamin D levels if you are deficient.

Consume foods that rich in vitamin D, like salmon, mackerel, tuna, beef liver, egg yolks, cheese, milk, cereal and orange juice. Also, it’s good to expose your body to sunlight every day for half an hour to allow your body to produce more vitamin D.

3. Ginger

One of the most common natural treatments for vertigo is ginger. It has long been considered that ginger treats motion sickness, and when taken while suffering from vertigo, it can alleviate the feeling of nausea. You can consume ginger in various forms – ginger tea, powdered ginger, ginger ale or ginger capsules. You can use it both for treatment and as a preventive measure.

4. Magnesium

Magnesium is an essential mineral for electrolyte balance in the body. If you have magnesium deficiency, your brain may not receive messages from your sensory nerves as it is supposed to. In addition, your brain may interpret messages from your inner ear that there is movement and gravity, even when there isn’t any movement. This causes dizziness and loss of balance.

To alleviate your vertigo take 500 mg magnesium supplements every day for a period of one month. Also, you can consume foods rich in magnesium, like avocados and dark leafy greens, bananas, dried apricots, almonds, cashews, walnuts, beans, dried peas, soy products and whole grains such as millet and brown rice.

5. Acupressure

Acupressure is another great method for quick elimination of vertigo symptoms. You can try a number of acupressure points to treat dizziness, nausea and anxiety. Try the following acupressure points to eliminate the symptoms of vertigo.

• Pericardium Point (P6)

Acupressure Pericardium 6 Point is very helpful point to get relief from vertigo. You can easily find this point on your wrist between the two tendons. Once you locate this pressure point on your wrist, gently apply pressure on it for a few moments. Then stimulate the same point on your other hand. By regularly stimulating this pressure point you can get a relief from various issues like vertigo, anxiety, dizziness, wrist pain, apoplexy, nausea, depression and chest congestion.

• Governing Vessel Point (GV26)

This acupressure point plays a vital role to treat problems like fainting, vertigo and dizziness. You can find it in between the upper lip and nose. When you find the governing vessel point, put your finger on the point and firmly press it for one to two minutes. Regularly applying pressure on this point will help you alleviate problems such as cramps, dizziness, spinal pain, fainting, vertigo and epilepsy.

• Gall Bladder 20 and 21 (GB20 and GB21)

These acupressure points are very popular pressure points for relieving stress and nervousness. You can find the GB 20 point at the base of the skull. It’s underneath the skull bone, in the gap on both sides of the neck. GB 21 point is located on the backside of the shoulders, midway between the shoulder and the base of the neck.

Once you locate these points, apply firm pressure on both sides simultaneously with your thumbs for a couple of minutes. Applying pressure on these points regularly will help you relieve irritability, mental stress, nervousness, sleeping disorders, migraine, vertigo and dizziness.

6. Hydrogen Peroxide

One of the most efficient home remedies for vertigo is hydrogen peroxide, which gets rid of organisms by oxidation. Hydrogen peroxide is usually used to treat ear infections and eliminating wax from the inner ear. It’s considered that peroxide in the ear treats vertigo by loosening and re-positioning the stones lodged in the inner ear canal.

Apply hydrogen peroxide on a clean cotton ball until it is soaked and lay down on your side. Next, squeeze out the hydrogen peroxide from the soaked cotton ball directly into the ear canal. Stay on your side for at least five minutes before sitting up. Switch sides and repeat the procedure. You will hear popping sound while you do this procedure and when the popping stops you can get up.

7. Keep yourself Hydrated

Not being hydrated can cause dizziness which is a prominent symptom of vertigo. It is absolutely essential to stay hydrated in order to prevent vertigo, and drink water as soon as possible once you feel dizziness.

If you are already feel dizziness, don’t gulp down a lot water at once but rather take small sips of water. Continue to drink water in short intervals until you feel hydrated. Always drink 8 to 10 glasses of water a day.

Additional Tips

• Sometimes you may feel dizzy as a result of insufficient oxygen due to improper breathing. Do some deep breathing exercises to eliminate the dizziness and vertigo.

• Try getting professional acupuncture for treating vertigo.

• Doing some yoga poses, like Shanmukhi Mudra, Shavasana and Salamba Sirsasana can alleviate symptoms of vertigo.

• Avoid consuming substances that have an impact on the circulation to your brain, including caffeine, alcohol, chocolate and illegal drugs.

Juicing: Healthier Than Eating Fruits & Vegetables Or Diet Trap?

In recent times, juicing fruits and vegetables has become an international phenomenon revolutionized by celebrities and wellness gurus. Juices are being touted as being great detoxes, cleanses and cures for almost everything from flagging energy levels to weight loss and prevention of disease.

Juicing is not just a craze which will go away, it is here to stay. There is something really appealing and delightful about it and to be able to blend up veggies which otherwise you won’t like to eat them raw every day.

No wonder markets are flooded with juice recipe books which make to the bestsellers lists, juice kiosks, and stalls at every possible location, juice home delivery services and so on.

Juice extractors and blenders sales are rising upwards especially in the US with brands like Philips, Joyoung, Moulinex, Hamilton Beach, and Kenwood leading the sales ladder. In fact cookware store, Lakeland, recorded a whopping increase of 400% in sales of juice extractors and blenders in 2015.

With celebrities touting the benefits of juicing to small boutique juice kiosks popping up in every small, big city and town, the big question attracting debates remains; Is juicing vegetables and fruits healthy, harmful or little more than just hype?

Is Juicing Vegetables and Fruits Healthy, Harmful or Just Little More Than Hype?

Ask millions of juicing aficionados and evangelists who claim it works as a miracle drink however there are not many scientific pieces of evidence to support the claims.

If you would ask a health guru or an expert in the field about their opinion on the pros and cons of juicing, you might need to clear your schedule for a week and still be confused.

Opinions are deeply divided hence let us take an in-depth look at all the pros and cons of juicing, cleanses and detox which anyways will leave us better informed.

Pros: What Are The Benefits of Juicing

Before we proceed, let us understand our fruit and vegetable consumption. According to a study published by CDC (Centers for Disease Prevention & Control) found that just 15% of US adults consume the recommended daily intake of fruits and vegetables.

What is even surprising that per capita fruit and vegetable consumption in the US have declined by 7% over the past 5 years according to a Study on America’s Consumption of Fruit & Vegetables.

For all those who don’t have the time or inclination to chop up or cook two servings of vegetables with every meal, juicing is a convenient way to eat their share of veggies on the go.
Juicing provides with the same nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients, as eating whole fruits and vegetables. What’s more, the water content in juices helps you stay hydrated.

Juicing Boosts Vegetable Intake

If you consume enough fruits and vegetables, that is great!

Ask yourself, do you actually consume the recommended amounts of fruits and vegetables every day? Most likely the answer would be NO.

Juicing sounds to be the perfect solution especially for those who are not inclined towards chewing on veggies with every meal and/or snacks. It is also a convenient and easy way to consume a variety of produce. Just extract/blend different fruits, veggies and you have a nutrient dense drink ready.

It also helps break the monotony of consuming just the fruits and vegetables you like. Juicing also gives you the freedom to try new combinations of produce which you normally would not include in your recipes. Just slip it in the juicer with other produce and get heaps of nutrients and vitamins you probably would miss out on otherwise.

What’s even great about juicing is that it is a great option for kids who are picky eaters. What could be a better way to keep your kids healthy and sipping onto nutritious drink instead of unhealthy sodas, shakes and other drinks which are high in sugars without any nutrients.

Fresh juices provide you with important nutrients such as potassium, folate, vitamins A, vitamin C which helps maintain energy and metabolismmaintain blood pressure and may also reduce your risk of heart disease.

Fresh juice not just tastes delicious, it is also a healthy snack. Juices can also be replaced for meals when required.

Juicing is an Easy Way to Get Lots of Nutrients

According to the Stanford Medicine Cancer Institute, one glass of carrot juice give you the same nutrients compared to eating five cups of chopped carrots.

Drinking juices provide you with an instant shot of multivitamins that tastes delicious and all the nutrients are absorbed better. Your body finds it easier to digest juices easily because all the insoluble fiber was filtered out during the juicing process.

Including fruits and vegetables in your diets offers many health benefits. Many studies have found that people who consume more vegetables and fruits are likely to have a reduced risk of many chronic diseases.

Fruits and vegetables are loaded with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, fiber and phytonutrients which are essential nutrients needed for many important body functions. They also provide protection against many diseases.

In a review of around 22 studies, it was found that drinking fresh vegetable and fruit juice or blended powder concentrate improved the levels of folate and antioxidant such as beta-carotene, vitamin C, and vitamin E.

In a study which was conducted by the Department of Agriculture study in which twelve fruits were analyzed, researchers found that 90 percent of the antioxidant activity was in the juice, rather than the fiber.

Juicing Is A Great Way to Reduce Produce Waste

Would you believe that 30 to 40% of the food supply is wasted in the US alone which equals to more than 20 pounds of food per person every month.

Juicing is a great way to play your part in reducing if not stopping food waste.

Juicing helps to use up any about-to-spoil produce such as a sadly shrunk cucumber, shriveled carrots or kale which might not be fresh enough to be included on dinner plates.

Cons: What Are The Negatives Of Juicing

Like everything, juicing also comes with its disadvantages. No doubt fruits and veggies are good for health and there are numerous studies which confirm that consuming fruits and vegetables reduces risks of many diseases.

However, there are not many studies which confirm the same when it comes to juices.

Juices Are Not Low Calorie, May Not Help Lose Weight

“Juicing is not a healthy craze,” says Priya Tew, a registered dietician with the British Dietetic Association, to the delicious magazine. According to her, “drinking a small glass of juice every day with breakfast or lunch won’t harm, in fact it is good and healthy”.

She further adds that “The problem starts when people start using juices as meal replacements. They end up consuming an awful lot of fruits and vegetables, possibly more than four portions in one glass which might sound healthy but it is not. It can add up to a lot of calories, sugars, and no fiber, fats or proteins”.

Probably juices are low calorie if you compare it with foods like pizza, burgers or french fries but in reality, they are a concentrated source of calories. Juices are also devoid of fiber which might make you feel hungry more often. What that means is that you would tend to eat or drink more.

Based on many studies, eating solid food helps feel full for longer and give the feeling of satiety compared to liquid meal replacements such as juices.

Juice diets provide decent calorie deficit which may help you lose weight initially, however, such a diet may slow down your metabolism in the long term. It may not sound right but juice diets may also lead to many nutrient deficiencies in your body.

Being on a juice diet for a couple of days could be a good thing to replenish your body with fluids especially if you are trying to cut back on alcohol.

Juices are not balanced diets especially for those who might be prone to diabetes. They lack proteins and fats. Dietitian Priya Tew advises against it and says “People can end up with an unbalanced diet, not getting the micronutrients they need and could end up lacking in protein, zinc, and other nutrients”.

Juices Have Concentrated Sugars

When you juice fruits, you strip away all the fiber and what you collect in a glass is the concentrated juice extracted from many fruits.

To give you an example, a cup of pomegranate seeds contains just 12 grams of sugar vis-a-vis a cup of pomegranate juice which contains 37 grams of sugar. Same goes for fruits like pineapples, oranges, apples etc.

Another example could be a very popular juice concoction which includes cucumbers, kale, apples, carrots, and lemons. It is a great recipe but moment you add apples and carrots, it becomes more concentrated on sugars.

So what you are doing is consuming a lot of fructose sugar in a very short time. It gets digested very fast and released in your blood stream which can lead to blood sugar spikes and fluctuations.

Juices Lack Fiber

Many people do not consume enough fiber in their well-balanced diets. According to the Institute of Medicine, an average American adult consumes just 15 grams of fiber per day and in the UK it is 18 grams. The recommended minimum intake of fiber is 30%.

Fiber is a vital component of a healthy and well-balanced diet. It can help prevent many diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, obesity, some types of cancers, and it also helps improve digestive health.

The only source of fiber is from plants based foods such as fruits and vegetables. Foods such as meat, fish and dairy products don’t contain any fiber

For the matter of fact, juicing process removes up to 90% of insoluble fiber leaving behind negligible amounts of soluble fiber.

Insoluble fiber plays many other roles in our body. Firstly, it aids in slowing down sugar absorption in the blood and avoid sugar spikes. Secondly, it scrubs and cleans the digestive tract which helps get rid off trapped toxins and plaques.

Juicing also removes many antioxidants which are naturally bound to fibers. To get complete health benefits of fiber and antioxidants from fruits and vegetables, it becomes vital not to waste them by juicing.

Most Juices Contain No Fats & No Proteins

Since juices do not contain enough fats and proteins, they are not nutritionally balanced for muscle maintenance, sustained energy, cell membrane and hormone balance, gut integrity and long-term health.

Fats are vital for your body which allow your body to transport fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamin A, D, E, and K.

These fat soluble vitamins aid many important functions in our body such as regulating blood pressure, heart rate, metabolic functions and are key to the nervous system, bone health, cell membrane formation and more.

Since most of the fats cannot be produced by the body such as omega 3 fatty acids, they need to be consumed from foods within our diets.

Lack of fats in the diet may lead to decreased energy levels and mental health, hormones reproduction and more.

Alternate View On Juicing

Not all experts agree on the pros or cons of juicing which does not mean you toss away your juicers or start replacing your meals with juices. There is a very thin line to be drawn on what is healthy for you.

No two humans are alike, what may work for me may not necessarily work for you.

There is no harm in going on a juice diet for a couple of days to detox or cleanse, it may help in just reducing intake of processed foods and help to get out of the daily food rut.

An occasional juice diet can give you an instant shot of multivitamins and minerals boosting your energy levels and recharge your batteries.

Should You Juice Or Not To Juice

The debate on whether you should juice or not can be neverending. Many juicing enthusiasts suggest that juicing fruits and vegetables help absorb nutrients better and take off stress from the digestive system from the fiber.

On the other hand, there is no scientific evidence which suggests that juicing is better than eating fruits and vegetables.

Well, if you do not like or enjoy eating salads, fruits and veggies, juicing them could be a fun way to incorporate all the veggies and fruits to your diets and toss in some fiber back into your juice.

Another way not to miss out on fiber is to consider blending which will also retain healthy antioxidants and phytonutrients.

Add Fats And Protein To Your Juices

It might not sound right but you can make your juices balanced by adding fats and proteins.

Of course, you cannot slip in steak or fish fillet in the blender but you might want to add chia seeds or flaxseeds which will provide you with a good source of omega 3 fatty acids, fiber and antioxidants.

You can even add some olive oil, coconut oil or cod liver oil which come with added health benefits.

Adding proteins to your juice could be done simply by adding in powdered amino acids or hydrolyzed collagen into your juice.

Choose Juicing Method

If you have the need and can afford the original Norwalk hydraulic press juicer for $2,500, nothing like it. Otherwise, there are two different types of basic juicers available in the market.

  • Centrifugal Juicers

This is the most common type of juicer available in the markets. It works typically by utilizing a very fast-spinning metal blade that spins against a mesh filter. The centrifugal force separates the juice and pulp into different containers.

One of the major issue with centrifugal juicers is that they generate a lot of heat which destroys some of the enzymes and nutrients.

  • Cold-Press Juicers

These new generation juicers are also known as masticating juicers. They work by crushing and pressing the produce slowly for the highest yield. They also do not produce much heat compared to their counterpart and keeps nutrients intact.

Some Tips To Keep In Mind

Try and consume freshly squeezed or blended juices immediately because the antioxidants and other phytonutrients start to break down instantly once exposed to light and air.

Fresh juice is also vulnerable to develop harmful bacteria and cause many health issues.

Juices may lead to weight gain because they may contain more sugar than you realize.

Ideally, you should go heavy on veggies and low on fruits. 4:1 vegetable to fruit ratio will ensure that sugar intake is balanced.

Try and not to replace a meal with juice more than a few times a week and ensure you get all the nutrients which you otherwise get from whole foods.

Take Away

No doubt fresh juices contain important nutrients such as vitamins and antioxidants that can benefit your health.

Juicing in moderation can be healthy and help you replenish essentials nutrients, but it’s definitely not a good way to lose weight, detox, cleanse or diet.

Ideally, fruits and vegetables are still the healthiest and most nutritious when consumed whole providing you with all the goodness of natural health.
