The Importance of Zinc

A study published in the June 2012 edition of the Journal of Trace Elements in Medicine and Biology found that zinc deficiency may afflict as many as 2 billion people worldwide.2 These numbers indicate that issues with consuming enough zinc or absorbing zinc when consumed may be problematic for a third of the people around the globe.

Generally, when someone is suffering from a zinc deficiency, it is because the intake is inadequate, because it is being poorly absorbed into the body or their need for zinc increases.

Risk Factors for Developing Zinc Deficiency

Many factors can affect the body’s ability to process zinc. Here are some common things that can impact zinc absorption or contribute to zinc deficiency:

• Diabetes
• Alcoholism
• Age—elderly are more prone for having zinc deficiency

• Using zinc-depleting drugs, such as many birth control pills, blood pressure medications and antibiotics
• Vegetarianism
• Pregnant and lactating women
• Sickle cell disease (a group of inherited red blood cell disorders)

Current Tests are Not Accurate

Plasma or serum zinc levels are the most commonly used indices for evaluating zinc deficiency, but these levels do not necessarily reflect cellular zinc status due to tight homeostatic control mechanisms (I’ve already mentioned this issue when it comes to detecting magnesium deficiency).

A person may suffer from zinc deficiency despite the absence of abnormal laboratory indices. In many cases, doctors consider risk factors (such as inadequate caloric intake, alcoholism, and digestive diseases) and symptoms of zinc deficiency (such as impaired growth in infants and children) when determining the need for zinc supplementation.

Symptoms of Zinc Deficiency

A zinc deficiency can be identified by:

• Growth retardation
• Diarrhea
• Hair loss (nutritional deficiencies are one of the ten causes of hair loss)
• Delayed sexual maturation and impotence
• Loss of appetite
• Delayed healing of wounds
• Eye and skin lesions
• White spots on fingernails, transverse lines and poor nail growth or brittle nails
• Headaches and dizziness
• Bitter taste in mouth
• Zinc deficiency is common in people who have low lymphocyte count

Many of these symptoms are non-specific and often associated with other health conditions; therefore, a medical examination is necessary to ascertain whether a zinc deficiency is present.

Recommended Zinc Intake

The Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for zinc is 8 milligrams per day for adult females and 11 milligrams per day for adult males.

The recommended intake for children 1-8 years old ranges from 3-5 milligrams, increasing as the child gets older.

Males 9-13 years old require 8 milligrams of zinc per day. After the age of 14, the requirement increases to the 11 milligrams per day that is required for all adult males.

For females over the age of 8, the requirement stays stable at 8 milligrams per day, except for ages 14-18, where the recommendation increases to 9 milligrams per day.

Pregnant and lactating women have an increased need for zinc at 11-13 milligrams per day, depending on age.

Sources of Zinc in Food

• Shellfish, beef, and other red meats are rich sources of zinc.
• Nuts and legumes are relatively good plant sources of zinc.

Zinc bioavailability (the fraction of zinc retained and used by the body) is relatively high in meat, eggs, and seafood because of the relative absence of compounds that inhibit zinc absorption and the presence of sulfur-containing amino acids (cysteine and methionine) that improve zinc absorption.

The zinc in whole-grain products and plant proteins is less bioavailable due to their relatively high content of phytic acid, a compound that inhibits zinc absorption. This is one of the reasons for soaking your nuts and seeds before eating them.

How To Get Rid Of Vertigo, Dizziness And Ringing In Your Ears

Vertigo is not a disease. It is a condition that can be caused by more than 300 causes. The most common are posterior vertigo, inflammation of the vestibular nerve, Manior’s disease, hearing nerve tumor, brain blood flow disorders, changes in the neck tissue, injuries, excessive muscle tension, old age, stress and more.

People with vertigo often describe it as a disturbance in the balance in two ways, such as movement around the head or as a loss of orientation in space. The difficulties are exacerbated by the movement of the head and the change in the position of the body, and are often transmitted by hearing disorders, noise in the ear and nausea.

In vertigo caused by diseases of the inner ear (otogenic vertigo), the objects we see move horizontally from the painful to the healthy ear, and the balance is disturbed at the painful ear. Non-specific disorders of balance or false vertigo are characterized by flashing or darkness in the eyes, fainting, feeling fullness and pressure in the head and ears. The most common cause is short-term deficiency or reduced blood flow to the brain or neck.

Positional vertigo is the most common of all, and is caused by inadequate movement or head position, lying, moving in bed, or moving the head back. It lasts a minute or less, or it can be accompanied by rhythmic flickering of the eyes, while hearing remains preserved. It can be repeated every few days, and even after a few months.

Inflammation of the vestibular nerve, an attack of severe vertigo lasts for several days, and then gradually relaxes within weeks. Although the cause of the disorder and the site of damage have not been proven, most doctors consider it to be an inflammation of the nerve of the vestibular labyrinth of the inner ear.

Manior’s disease – it is a disorder in the microcirculation in the inner ear. The disease is characterized by sudden attacks of dizziness, which may last from several minutes to several hours. The attack can be so strong, that the patient needs to lie down. This type of vertigo is usually short-lived. It is accompanied by nausea, vomiting, noises, loss of balance. Sometimes people see double.

Tumor of the hearing nerve – is characterized by a constant vertigo that can be measured. Other signs suggesting a tumor include: hearing impairment and disorders of the rest of the nerves in the brain.

HOME REMEDIES FOR VERTIGO

While vertigo comes and goes on its own, a couple of physical exercises and home remedies can be done if your symptoms don’t disappear. We offer a couple of methods that you should try to eliminate vertigo using exercises and home remedies.

1. Physical Exercises

Physical exercises are the first thing you should try to get quick relief from vertigo. The inner ear canals have small calcium “stones” that move and keep your balance. But, Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo can prevent the stones from moving like they should and this has an impact on your balance.

You can overcome this by doing a few maneuvers. They include head movements that force the calcium debris causing vertigo to no longer cause any symptoms. But do them when you are somewhere safe and won’t be driving a vehicle for a while, since they can cause increased dizziness for a shorter period of time.

• Epley Maneuver

Start by sitting on a bed. Turn your head 45 degrees to the affected ear (left or right). Quickly lie back, maintaining the head turned. Now, your shoulders should be on the pillow, with your head reclined. Wait for 30 seconds. Turn your head 90 degrees to the side of your affected ear, without raising it.

Now your head should be looking 45 degrees to the affected side. Wait another 30 seconds. Turn both your head and body 90 degrees to the side of the affected ear, into the bed. Stay like this for another 30 seconds. Finally, sit up on the side of the affected ear.

• Half Somersault

While you kneel, quickly tip your head upward and then back. Assume somersault position with your chin tucked as far as you can and toward the knee. Turn your head about 45 degrees toward the right shoulder (if your right ear is affected, in case you have issue with the left ear turn the head towards the left shoulder), to face the right elbow (or left in case the left ear is affected). Maintaining your head at 45 degrees, raised it to back/shoulder level. Maintaining your head at 45 degrees, raise it to a fully upright position.

• Brandt-Daroff Maneuver

Begin with an upright and seated position. Move into a lying position on your bed on one side with the nose pointed up at an angle of about 45 degrees. Stay in this position for about half a minute (or until your vertigo subsides). Move back to seated position. Do the same on the other side.

2. Vitamin D

If you are suffering from vertigo and dizziness, you might want to check your vitamin D levels. If vertigo is really a result of vitamin D deficiency, once your get normal levels of this vitamin, the vertigo should subside. This process may take up to couple of months, depending on your vitamin D levels. Taking vitamin D supplements is a good way to maintain normal vitamin D levels if you are deficient.

Consume foods that rich in vitamin D, like salmon, mackerel, tuna, beef liver, egg yolks, cheese, milk, cereal and orange juice. Also, it’s good to expose your body to sunlight every day for half an hour to allow your body to produce more vitamin D.

3. Ginger

One of the most common natural treatments for vertigo is ginger. It has long been considered that ginger treats motion sickness, and when taken while suffering from vertigo, it can alleviate the feeling of nausea. You can consume ginger in various forms – ginger tea, powdered ginger, ginger ale or ginger capsules. You can use it both for treatment and as a preventive measure.

4. Magnesium

Magnesium is an essential mineral for electrolyte balance in the body. If you have magnesium deficiency, your brain may not receive messages from your sensory nerves as it is supposed to. In addition, your brain may interpret messages from your inner ear that there is movement and gravity, even when there isn’t any movement. This causes dizziness and loss of balance.

To alleviate your vertigo take 500 mg magnesium supplements every day for a period of one month.
