Although each of our senses is important because they fulfill functions that no other can do, the sight plays a more than crucial role.

Seeing allows us to be connected with the world, and with all the wonderful things that surround us; The landscapes, the faces of the people we love, the places we are familiar with and everything that happens around us.

But we often neglect this very important sense, especially when we are young and we submit to efforts or jobs that involve working the sight more than we should.

When we strain our eyes in front of the screens of the mobile devices, or the long hours of study in dim light, or watch TV at close range we notice that after a few hours our sight is tired, irritated, with watery eyes and often up to with blurred vision.

All these things can generate what we call the effusion. This usually occurs in people who suffer from the heart, especially if the stroke occurs in the left eye, as it also happens in people who have high blood pressure.

The stroke itself is not as serious as it shows that we may suffer from a heart condition, either because the heart works too much, because of an intense physical activity or because of stress.

To favor the heart and help you more relaxed we recommend that you sleep on the right side so you do not have to put up with too much pressure. Another thing you could do is avoid eating fats, something that damages the heart and your body in general. Also the consumption of alcoholic beverages, the cigarette and the sedentary life threaten against your cardiac health.

A way to take care of the heart and at the same time the sight has to do with changes in the lifestyle that will result in a general benefit for your body.

10 Powerful Home Remedies For Getting Rid Of Ants

Let’s face it, ants in your house can be a big nuisance. It’s not only frustrating to have ants running around, but a colony of ants can actually cause a lot of damage as well.

It is pretty unhygienic to have ants inside your home. Some ant varieties like Fire and Harvester can even bite humans. Carpenter ants, on the other hand, are known to damage building materials. Ants inside the house certainly contaminate the food. They carry bacteria which they can transfer to food or an open wound.

Dealing with ants can be very frustrating. Pesticides for ants contain chemicals that are harmful to humans and the environment, but there are some natural, non-toxic ways to control ants. These may take some time and patience but will provide excellent results.

Here are some of the best home remedies to get rid of ants:

1. Cinnamon

Cinnamon is an effective household ant repellent. Its smell discourages ants from entering your house and scrounging in your kitchen. Just put some cinnamon on the entrance of the house and the areas from where you think the ants can enter. This a good method to also keep your house smelling fresh and earthy.

2. White vinegar

White vinegar will also send an eviction notice to ants on your premises. They cannot bear its strong smell. In addition, the smell masks their scent trails, making them lose their direction. Prepare a solution of equal amounts of water and white vinegar. Store this solution and sprinkle it at the points from where the ants enter. Repeat this once daily.

3. Chalk

Chalk contains calcium carbonate, which helps in keeping ants away. Spray some powdered chalk in the areas that are the entry points of ants or draw a line of chalk at the entrance.

4. Lemons

To make your kitchen and other areas of your house ant-proof, try lemon. The smell deters ants and its acidic property masks their scent trails. Just squeeze a lemon or place lemon peels in places from where the ants enter. You can also wash your floors with water that has a little lemon juice added to it. Ants don’t like the smell of lemon juice so they will keep away.

5. Peppermint oil

Peppermint is a natural insect repellent that can effectively keep ants away. Ants hate its strong smell, which also disrupts their smelling capabilities so they cannot detect food sources. Prepare a mixture of 10 drops of peppermint essential oil and a cup of water and sprinkle it wherever you find ants. Repeat this twice a day. You can even sprinkle dried peppermint instead of the liquid mixture.

6. Cucumber peel

Ants have a natural aversion to cucumber, as they cannot stand its taste. Bitter cucumbers work best, but you can use normal cucumbers, too. All you have to do is to place pieces of the peel in all areas where you have seen ant activity.

7. Pepper

Ants are pretty fond of sugar but they hate pepper. Sprinkle pepper at the areas from where ants enter your house. This is will help getting rid of ants.

8. Cayenne pepper

Cayenne pepper also works as an effective ant repellent. The strong nature of cayenne pepper destroys the chemical signals that ants rely onto navigate toward food, their nest, and other places. Without a proper signal, ants will not able to survive and will thus look for new places to go. Just sprinkle cayenne pepper powder in areas where you notice ants.

9. Food-grade diatomaceous earth (DE)

DE also works well as an ant repellent. This powder is the fossilized remains of marine phytoplankton. The microscopic razor sharp edges of DE can cut through the ants’ exoskeletons, gradually causing their body to dry out. Just gently sprinkle a thin layer of DE on windowsills, beneath the fridge, under cabinets, in and around garbage cans and any other places where you see ants.

10. Natural bait

To permanently rid yourself of ants, you really need to get rid of the ant colony. You should make a bait from peanut butter, sugar, Borax, and water and let it the ants take it back to their colony. Borax is toxic to ants and helps rid them from your house and garden. Ants are attracted to it and, when ingested, it ultimately kills them.

By peeling the banana, you’ve probably noticed some strange white fibers underneath the peel. They attach to the hands and half the fruit, like a spider web, standing out for a less sweet taste than the pulp. These fibers are called phloem, and today we will tell you something interesting about them

What are floemas?

The phloem is a conductive tissue of the plant, which carries the products of photosynthesis. In the case of banana, they interpret the umbilical cord role for the supply of nutrients necessary for proper growth, when the fruit is in the process of growth.

The presence and size of the phloem is not an indicator of banana quality. If you consider yourself a gourmet of this fruit, you can eat with ease these fibers – they are absolutely healthy.

Moreover, the banana phloem provides the same useful fiber, vitamins and minerals as the pulp.
We hope you have found it interesting to learn something new about your favorite fruit. Also, we recommend that you know the useful properties of the banana peel. That’s right, do not hurry to throw this part of the banana in the trash!

6 Secrets Men Never Tell

What do we know about men? They will always help a damsel in distress; they love football; most of them are exquisitely handsome with a beard. And that’s it — at least according to most girls.

Bright Side would like to share some secrets told by men themselves. Painfully.

6. They need moments of doing nothing.

It may sound unexpected, but they don’t always want to be at the head of things, making serious decisions and being responsible for the consequences. Now and then, men just want to have some time for themselves to enjoy moments of peace and quiet.

5. Men don’t notice trifles.

Men think globally. Just accept it, and don’t try to make them pay attention to little details. Maybe you should even follow their example because women often concentrate on trifles too much, which takes away all the joy from a situation as a whole.

4. Nonsensical thoughts are a great rest for the mind.

Can you imagine that men don’t actually spend each minute of their lives thinking about how to pay the mortgage, provide for their family, or save the world? It turns out they quite often think of some nonsense.

3. They have fears too.

Men are involuntary victims of the hero image created for them by modern society. It compels them to keep a straight face in any circumstances, which is hard because they fear the unknown as much as anyone, doubting their decisions and worrying.

2. They appraise every passing woman.

A man will always stare, evaluating a passing pretty lady. Mankind exists, in fact, thanks to man’s ability to appraise women by their looks, choosing the best one to become the mother of his children. It’s in their nature, and it can’t be avoided.

1. They appreciate support.

Men need emotional support as much as women — it’s important for anyone, anywhere. The hectic pace of today’s life and emotional stress don’t make any difference between genders.

9 Things You Should Know to Survive in a Critical Situation

Anything can happen in life, including situations that threaten it. To prepare you for even the most unforeseen events, Bright Side will tell you 9 rules of survival that will help you cope with difficulties and may even save your life.

9. Make a fire from a phone battery.

If you get lost far away from civilization, your gadget will be useless unless you start a fire from its battery.

Many smartphones and tablets have lithium (Li-ion) batteries. If you pierce such a battery with something sharp, it’ll cause a chemical reaction that results in fire. All you need is to prepare firewood in advance.

8. Escape a rip current.

When swimming in the sea, we can face a dangerous phenomenon called “rip current“ or simply ”rip.” It can appear in any place. When we get caught with it, our instinct tells us to swim to the shore as quickly as possible. But, as a result, we only move away from it.

If you get caught in a rip tide, don’t swim straight to the shore: move diagonally or parallel to it to get out of the current. Rips aren’t wide, so you can swim across them to save your life.

7. Run away from a crocodile.

When moving in a straight line, a crocodile can run faster than a human. Yet, due to their short legs and elongated body, they’re clumsy on corners. This is why they won’t pursue a prey they are constantly losing sight of.

If a crocodile chases after you, run in zigzags to escape. And, in general, it’s better to stay as far away as possible from bodies of water where you can meet crocodiles and alligators.

6. If you are stung by a jellyfish.

A jellyfish sting can cause neurogenic shock, an allergic reaction, and a strong intoxication of the body. Here’s what you need to do to avoid or relieve the unpleasant consequences of such a meeting:

  1. Immediately clean the wound, and get rid of the remains of the tentacles. To avoid a new sting, don’t touch tentacles with your bare hands.
  2. Wash the sting area with salt water. Never ever use fresh water for this: it activates the stinging cells.
  3. To remove toxins, make a compress of apple cider vinegar or alcohol.
  4. Drink plenty of water, and visit a doctor. Water will help you recover faster, and the doctor will prescribe the necessary medicines.

5. Remember the “rules of 3.”

The rules of 3 are rules that show the average survival of a person under certain conditions.

  • 3 minutes without air, on average, until a person loses consciousness;
  • 3 days without water, after which comes life-threatening dehydration;
  • 3 weeks without food without serious damage to health. In a critical situation, the body is rebuilt and sometimes can do without food for a month.

When things aren’t going well, it’s worth remembering the “rules of 3” and setting priorities.

4. Glue a wound.

Let’s say you do repairs at your house: one careless move, and you cut your hand, and there are no bandages left. In this situation, you can use super glue. It not only pulls the ends of the wound together but also disinfects it. However, it’s still better to visit a doctor.

3. Don’t eat snow when you’re thirsty.

Some people think it’s a good idea to eat snow to quench thirst. Yet it’s better not to do this in a critical situation, and not because you can get a sore throat. The fact is cold snow will cool your body, and it will spend additional energy to keep warm.

You will waste additional energy and freeze more quickly. Rescuers recommend waiting until the snow melts before drinking it.

2. Extinguish a burning pan.

In a matter of seconds, a frying pan left unattended on the stove can catch fire. This happens if the oil gets too hot. In such a situation, never ever pour water on burning oil. It will make the fire bigger and stronger, and the oil will splash in all directions.

If the flame is small, you can pour baking soda in the pan: it absorbs oxygen. Yet the most effective way to avoid a fire is to cover the frying pan with a dense cotton cloth. An ordinary blanket or a stack of T-shirts from the closet will do.

1. If a cut is deep.

Many people believe that when you get cut it’s necessary to urgently remove the shard and clear the wound. It’s true. Yet if the wound is deep, you should never remove the object or shard.

It’s just like that children’s trick with water and a plastic bag. Having damaged large vessels, the shard blocks them. But as soon as you remove the object, the wound will start bleeding. Therefore, sometimes it’s better not to touch the place of injury at all until the ambulance arrives.

Usually we don’t say this, but we hope you’ll never have to use these tips. Stay safe.

15 Aluminum Foil Life Hacks You Didn’t Know About

We use aluminum foil for oven baking, and that’s why we always have it around. Surprisingly, aluminum foil can be used not only for cooking.

Bright Side found out the best ways to use foil for household purposes. Those who read them all will see a bonus at the end of the article.

Replace a funnel

If you need to pour some liquid into a bottle, make a foil funnel as described here.

Put some aluminum foil under the clothes before ironing, as described here. Foil becomes hot really fast, and this is how your clothes can be ironed from both sides.

Sharpen your scissors

If you need to sharpen your scissors and get rid of rust, cut a piece of foil 7-10 times, just as described in this blog.

Extend battery life

If your batteries have run down and you do not have any new ones, use some aluminum foil. Place the foil according to this instruction.

Remove static electricity from your clothes

Put some foil balls in the washer together with the laundry (look here for details). After washing, your clothes won’t accumulate electricity and attract dust and hair.

Clean the iron

Clean your iron with a foil ball as described here.

Clean silverware

In order to clean silver, put aluminum foil on the bottom of a tray. Then add some baking soda, salt, and boiled water. You can see the instructions in this blog.

Move furniture easily

In order to move furniture easily, put pieces of foil under its legs as you see here. Foil creates additional sliding.

Improve the Wi-Fi signal

Foil can help to improve a Wi-Fi signal. Fold it several times, and put it behind the antenna like a screen. You can see the details here.

Clean a hot glue gun

You can easily clean a glue gun from old glue with a piece of foil. It’s described here.

Protect food from burning

In order to protect food from sticking in the frying pan, put a layer of foil in the bottom. This is also how you can cook without oil.

Removing rust from chrome-plated surfaces

Make a ball out of foil, soak it, and rub onto a rusty chrome-plated surface. You can find the instructions in this blog.

Seal plastic bags

If you need to seal a plastic bag, put a piece of foil over its edge, as seen here, and put an iron over it.

Use foil for a touchscreen

Surprisingly, touchscreens react to foil. If you wrap a pencil with foil, you can get a handmade stylus. If you don’t have sensor gloves, wrap your finger with foil, and use your smartphone wearing regular gloves.

Make your own cookie cutters

You can make any cookie cutter out of foil in a few minutes using this instruction.

Bonus: whiten your teeth

Mix some baking soda with toothpaste, and put a thick layer of this mixture over a foil strip. Apply the strip to your teeth. Remove it after one hour, and rinse your mouth thoroughly.

10 Ordinary Vegetables That Look Extraterrestrial

Every day we cook and eat ordinary products, but we can’t imagine how strange they may look sometimes.

Bright Side did some research and found the weirdest vegetables from all over the world. Each vegetable is more curious than the previous one, so be sure to get to our number one.

10. Colorful Corn

This corn with translucent colorful grains was bred by Carl Barnes, an American farmer. It is called Glass Gem. This corn does not fade while boiling, but it is still too hard to eat. It is used for making popcorn and corn flour.

9. Romanesco Broccoli

This alien vegetable was bred in Italy as a result of a mix of cauliflower and broccoli. It is full of nutrients: carotene, vitamin C, zinc. It contains less dietary fiber than broccoli and it is easier to digest. Romanesco has a delicate flavor, reminiscent of broccoli.

8. Strawberry Spinach

Surprisingly, ordinary spinach has a strange variety with these little berries that look like strawberries or raspberries. Both the leaves and berries are edible. This spinach has a high amount of iron and contains as much protein as powdered milk. However, the berries are almost tasteless (but still nutritious).

7. Purple Yam

Purple potatoes are one of the subspecies of yam that originated from Peru and Colombia. Healthy nutrition fans love this vegetable: it contains antioxidants and helps to prevent many diseases.

6. Nopal Cactus

Mexicans love this cactus so much that it became a common food in their supermarkets, just like corn or potatoes. Nopal is rich in vitamins, and it helps to burn fat. 4. Lotus Root

Lotus root is considered to be dainty in Japanese, Chinese, and Thai cuisine. It is also called the “fugu fish” of the vegetable world: lotus root can be poisonous if cooked incorrectly. Useful properties of the root have been known since ancient times: it contains a lot of vitamins and amino acids.

3. Chinese Bitter Pumpkin

This spiky vegetable is popular in Asia. It is important to cook it right because it is bitter and its raw juice is poisonous. However, the bitter melon is very nutritious: it contains iron, calcium, and potassium. Recent research proved that bitter melon juice can kill pancreatic cancer cells.

2. Oca

This unusual vegetable is cultivated in South America: Colombia, Peru, Chile. Oca tastes like potato, but it is rich in flavor and has bright furrowed bulbs. Unlike potatoes, oca can be eaten raw. Mashed oca is very mealy.

1. Watermelon Radish

The name is deceptive — this radish only looks like a watermelon. It is not sweet, and it is as nutritious as an ordinary radish, but it looks way more interesting.

Even the most ordinary vegetables can surprise you.
